Reconciliation Australia

  Introduction
In this edition of RAP e-news we have a focus on the RAP refresh and report phase of RAPping, which is a critical part of every RAP journey.  We also discover a small footy club in Queensland that has a leading RAP and experience a bit of Yolngu culture.

RAPs help to answer the often asked question of ,  What does reconciliation look like?”

Reconciliation Australia’s RAP advisors help you to answer this question for your organsiation and also support your organisation in its RAP and reconciliation journey.

RAPs help achieve a fairer society.  They provide us with a framework for sometimes ‘tough’ discussions and help us work together and build a shared pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories – and our shared histories as Australians.
What do you need to know?

How to “report and refresh” your RAP.

Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs) are living documents.  Your RAP includes a commitment to publicly report and refresh annually. Tracking and reporting progress ensures that you, your RAP network and the wider community can recognise achievements and challenges, and share lessons learned with others.  Reflections and learnings, together with consideration of new opportunities can then be built into your refreshed RAP.

Reporting is a simple process. We encourage you to report in a way that reflects your organisation and its journey.

Visit the reporting webpage at Reconciliation Australia for more detail.

Help us finish Oz

What can you do to support reconciliation as an individual?  One answer is to visit Reconciliation Australia’s ‘Unfinished Oz’ website and connect with other Australians like yourself who are participating in the reconciliation journey.

Help to ‘finish Oz’ by following the link below.

RAP workshops

RAP workshops support new and existing RAPpers on their reconciliation journey.

The next RAP workshops will be in Adelaide in late September 2010 and Hobart in late October 2010.

Please contact your RAP advisor if you are interested in attending one of these workshops or know of someone from another organisation that wants to attend.  Dates will be published shortly.

Useful tools

Reconciliation Australia has an online tool, called Share Our Pride, to help individuals start or continue their journey through an introduction to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their culture and to building respectful relationships.

  Hot Tips
Drafting Tip

Identify measurable targets for each of your RAP actions that are robust indicators of progress by your organisation.

Implementation Tip

Assign accountabilities for implementing actions to individual people, rather than sharing amongst several people.  Perhaps consider setting clear primary responsibilities to implementing actions to one person with support from others.

Report and Refresh Tip

Have your RAP Working Group oversee production of your RAP reporting.  Also find opportunities to ‘refresh’ the RAP Working Group so that new eyes and insights are available to your organisation.

RAP of the Month: Football club leads the way in Reconciliation

The Northern Pride are the first Rugby League football club in the country at any level to have their RAP officially ratified by Reconciliation Australia. The NRL/ARL is the only other Rugby League body to have a RAP and ‘The Pride’ are very proud to be leading the way.

The Northern Pride’s RAP uses Rugby League and sport as a vehicle for reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians.

Read more about this fascinating story at RAP of the Month.

Garma

The ancient sound of the yidaki (didgeridoo) last week called all people to come together at the Garma Festival in North East Arnhem Land.  Held from 6 to 10 August, Garma is an annual event and the largest and most vibrant celebration of the culture of Yolngu culture in recent memory.

Each year Reconciliation Australia invites women who are leaders in their sectors to experience Garma.  For many it has a positive impact, creating opportunities for cultural awareness and understanding—and in many cases assists in the development or implementation of their organisation’s RAP.
